History of the LineIn October 1946, Baylor alumni received the first issue of the Baylor Line. The new magazine's name derived from the title of the school's alma mater, referring to the long line of Baylor graduates and partisans marching "forever down the years." The Line was published by the Ex-Students' Association of Baylor University as the successor to the Baylor Century, a fundraising-oriented publication that had been produced by the university leading up to (and briefly following) the observance of Baylor's centennial in 1945.
Since that time, the Line has achieved a remarkable record of success in supporting Baylor University by strengthening the bonds between Baylor alumni and their alma mater. Published by the separately chartered Baylor Alumni Association, the Line is empowered by its editorial independence to achieve excellence in publishing and alumni relations. The Line's contents reflect the full range of alumni interests and concerns, from balanced coverage of controversial campus issues to news of former classmates' activities, providing readers with a uniquely candid, entertaining, and informative mix of stories.
The Line has won a number of awards in competitions sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the primary association for education advancement officers, including public relations managers, publications editors, fundraisers, and government relations officers.
In the 2001 edition of the national CASE Circle of Excellence Awards Program, a panel of jurors awarded the Line a silver medal in the "College and University General Interest Magazines" category--one of only twelve magazines in the nation so honored and the Line's first national award for general excellence. Other magazines winning awards included those from Stanford, Cornell, Brown, and Dartmouth. In the last two years, the Line has won three other national CASE awards, for staff writing and illustration.
In addition, the Line also has earned more than forty awards in CASE District IV awards competitions--which include entries from schools in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mexico--during the past four years.
