In Memoriam

Edwin P. Horner
(February 1, 2008)

We have lost a consummate gentleman who had a loving heart for all. Ed was devoted to the art and craft of teaching, which he regarded as the highest calling of a faculty member.

He enjoyed nothing more than studying and discussing the law—especially oil and gas law and contracts—with all who shared his interest and passion for learning. Ed had a fabled knack for remembering not only the names of his students, but also their hometowns and some interesting piece of information about their background and experiences.

He was a completely humble and unassuming man who was an icon within the Baylor Law community. Ed loved everyone, and everyone loved Ed.

Marvin L. "Hub" Northen '29
(February 22, 2008)

It is sad to realize that "Mr. Northen," as I called him, has made his last Baylor phone call. He was one of the oldest and most ardent supporters of Baylor and Baylor athletics that I have ever known.

Although he lived in Shreveport, Louisiana, he and his late wife drove to Baylor for many games. Later, his daughter—also an ardent Baylor supporter—drove him to Waco. In these last years, as Mr. Northen was nearing his one hundredth birthday, I would see him in Waco at a football game, cheering on the Baylor Bears.

When he added me thirty or forty years ago to his list of Baylor "phone call" friends, I was honored because the list included Baylor administration, regents, and all the head coaches and assistant coaches for every Baylor sport. You could count on the phone ringing soon after Baylor had defeated someone, signed a good recruit, or hired a new coach. Many times when he talked to me, he had already talked to Coach Teaff, Coach Lane, or another prominent Baylor coach.

He would not only make personal phone visits, but he would give his listener sports information concerning recruiting, injuries—the works. I imagine that even Dave Campbell learned a few things from him.

I know that he and many other departed Baylor fans are joining in on some "Sic 'em, Bears" in a truly heavenly pep rally!
