2008 Scholarship Winners
During the 2008 Scholarship Luncheon, four students received the Vivienne Mayes-Malone Scholarship: Selene Castillo, Nekpen Osuan, Deandre' Upshaw, and Ryan Phipps. For more on these outstanding students, see below.
Selene Castillo
Sophomore, biology major
Brownsville
A member of the Dean's List from 2006-08, Selene is a member of the Hispanic Student Association and the Minority Student Association of Pre-Health Students, and she's the treasurer of the American Medical Students Association. She's also a tutor for the Raising Saints Apostolate program. Selene has aspirations to become a pediatrician and work with the uninsured and impoverished citizens of Mexico and the Southern region of Texas.
Nekpen Osuan

Senior, University Scholar and economics major

Nekpen is a
Truman Foundation Scholarship finalist and a Ronald McNair Scholar, and she is on the
National Honor Roll and the Dean's List for 2005-07. A member of the
Baylor Student Government, she is an Honors College Representative, Junior Class
Senate Representative, Big XII Black Student Government Delegate, and president of the Baylor Campus NAACP, and she volunteered for the Waco
ISD Weekend Science Camps. Nekpen has aspirations to become a civil
rights lobbyist in Washington, D.C.
Deandre' Upshaw:
Junior, journalism major
Conroe
Named the "Individual Most Committed to Multiculturalism" by the Office of Student Activities, Deandre' works on the Round-Up yearbook staff. He's a contributing editor for the Lariat, and he's the public relations chair for the Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir. He's also the president of the National Association of Black Journalists. Deandre' has aspirations to become a broadcast journalist in the area of sports/news.
