On Saturday, May 17, more than 1,900 students participated in Baylor's commencement exercises, the largest number of graduates in the university's history. That total included students from Baylor's undergraduate and graduate programs, along with candidates from Truett Theological Seminary, which held graduation exercises on Friday, May 16. Pictured below is one new graduate, George M. Cowden IV with his father, George M. Cowden III '76, JD '78.

The Saturday morning and afternoon ceremonies included annual awards given by the Baylor Alumni Association. The Honorable Priscilla Richman Owen '76, JD '77, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, received the Price Daniel Distinguished Public Service Award. The George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award was presented to Dr. William M. Pinson Jr., distinguished visiting professor of Christian ethics at Baylor and executive director emeritus of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and to Dr. Daniel Vestal '66, MA '68, coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Also honored at both ceremonies were several outstanding faculty, including Dr. Michael J. Donahoo, associate professor of computer science; Dr. W. Dennis Tucker, associate professor and associate dean at Truett Seminary; Dr. Dwight P. Russell, associate professor of physics; Dr. David D. Corey, assistant professor of political science and assistant professor in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core; Dr. David A. Smith, lecturer in history and the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core; Dr. James R. Garven, professor of finance, insurance, and real estate; Dr. Jann Cosart, associate professor of music; Robert F. Darden III, associate professor of journalism; and Dr. Erich J. Baker, assistant professor of computer science. During the morning ceremony, Dr. Mona M. Choucair, lecturer in English, was presented with the Collins Outstanding Professor Award, an honor that is voted by the senior class.

After each commencement exercise, the Baylor Alumni Association hosted a new-graduate reception on the grounds of the Ferrell Center. Graduates and their families enjoyed refreshments and a chance to meet with professors and take pictures. The new alumni also picked up their graduation packets, which included a T-shirt and information about their free, one-year membership in the Baylor Alumni Association.

For a limited time, new graduates may also take advantage of a special half-price life membership in the alumni association. For more information, go to Join Now.
