Honoring Dr. ReynoldsFrom a speech given by Jeff Kilgore, executive director and CEO of the Baylor Alumni Association
I have the honor this evening of presenting a very special tribute to the memory of someone who made an immeasurable contribution to Baylor University and to me personally.
In my office, where I see it every day, I have a small card embossed with the initials H.H.R. and a note that Dr. Herbert
Reynolds jotted down for me one morning during our occasional IHOP breakfasts. The note contains a few simple words--written in his classic, elegant script: "Maintain and enhance a sound and ongoing equilibrium in the life of Baylor University." As a mentor and friend, Dr. Reynolds wanted to help me keep my focus clear on my role and our role as an association in the life of our university.
During his memorial service last summer, as I listened to the responses from other members of the Baylor family, I realized how he provided that same servant leadership in the lives of so many others--by the eloquence of his words and by his countless deeds of service.
One of my favorite of Dr. Reynolds' quotations--attributed to St. Francis of Assisi--I think most accurately depicts his approach to life, service, and friendship: "Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words."
As I have said many times, it's not possible to state the full impact of his leadership on Baylor University and his contribution to the alumni association. Dr. Reynolds was the rare combination of a visionary and an achiever. A steadfast champion of religious and academic freedom and a bold leader, he had a deep faith and unshakable integrity. Yet, despite his greatness, he was humble and approachable, witty and kind.
He was my friend. He was our friend. He was the best friend of this Heritage Club that he enjoyed so much. He believed in Baylor's heritage, and he believed in a strong alumni association. We were honored that he chose to serve as the convening chair of our Sesquicentennial Campaign, and the family graciously allowed us to name him memorial chair. It is only one of the many ways his influence will continue to be felt.
As most of you know, Dr. Reynolds credited his wife, Joy, with being the single greatest influence in his life. She was his soul mate and wife of fifty-seven years, and this tribute is as much to you, Mrs. Reynolds, as it is to him. We appreciate your accepting it. It is in profound gratitude for both of you that we present this tribute.
The plaque reads:
"Every individual needs something in life
to devote himself to that is larger than himself--
and the cause of Christ and
a quality education in a Christian context
are causes worthy of the best in any of us."
--From "The Quest for Excellence" by Herbert H. Reynolds,
The Baylor Line, November 1970
In loving memory of Dr. Herbert H. Reynolds,
with lasting gratitude for his servant leadership
and unwavering support. His life will continue to serve
as an example and an encouragement to us all.
