George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award
Each year since 1990, the Baylor Alumni Association has honored individuals who have exemplified the life and works of church leader George W. Truett. The George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award is presented at spring commencement to friends of Baylor who have shown its namesake's notable commitment to personal religious liberty and separation of church and state.
An 1897 graduate of Baylor University, Truett went on to pastor the largest Baptist congregation of his era and hold several prestigious positions in Baptist organizing bodies. During his nearly fifty-year ministry at the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Truett also served as president of both the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist World Alliance.
The 2008 award recipients, like Truett, have dedicated their lives to the Baptist faith. Dr. Daniel Vestal '66, MA '68, (pictured) was instrumental in the formation of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in 1991 and has served as its coordinator since that time. Dr. Bill Pinson, a distinguished visiting professor of Christian Ethics at Baylor, served as the executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) from 1983-2000, when he was named executive director emeritus.
